Networking & LinkedIn

It's not what you know.....it's who!

How do you find a job or internship?
No matter where you are in the world, job seekers share a common theme: "It's not what you know, it's who you know." In today's interconnected world, it might seem easy to find the perfect position on a large job board. However, the reality is that hiring decisions are made by people, making it essential to build a strong network for job search success.

How to Connect with People
Be Strategic. Connect.

LinkedIn

Most students spend too much time setting-up their LinkedIn Profile and too little actually using the tool! There are great resources on how to build a LinkedIn profile (web or video).

Stop worrying about your profile (okay, maybe worry a little) and start focusing on building connections. The first thing you want to do is to start connecting with your friends, family, and classmates. Then, go to the UNI Alumni Page and begin searching/sorting for people who have connection to you. Connect with people who have the same major, are working at organizations of interest, or are in your industry.

Next, start a conversation! The easiest way to do this is by asking for advice. We recommend 2-5 questions, similar to an informational interview

Build Your Network

LinkedIn ConnectionsNetworking is a crucial aspect of any job search. It involves building and nurturing professional relationships that can provide valuable insights, advice, and opportunities. By connecting with industry professionals, attending events, and engaging on platforms like LinkedIn, job seekers can uncover hidden job opportunities and gain referrals that might not be advertised publicly. Effective networking not only opens doors to potential job offers but also helps in understanding industry trends and gaining mentorship, making it an indispensable tool for career advancement.

Job Fairs & Recruiting Events
Engage one-on-one with organizations actively seeking talent. Recruiters are always on the lookout for promising candidates, so connecting with them early in your academic career can be highly advantageous.

Chambers of Commerce & Young Professionals Groups
Most communities have organizations like Chambers of Commerce or Economic Development groups that bring together the professional community. These organizations can help you connect with the right people. Additionally, larger communities often have groups for young professionals (ages 20-40) that provide excellent networking opportunities and valuable context.

LinkedIn
LinkedIn is the premier professional social network. Similar to Instagram or TikTok, its algorithm favors activity and connectedness. You can connect with people based on shared experiences, such as attending UNI, making it a powerful tool for expanding your professional network.
